Where passenger-carrying automobiles or other motor vehicles may be donated or where the use of such motor vehicles may be donated to units of the university system for the more effective performance of their educational, research, or other duties, such unit is authorized to take title to or possession of such vehicles and to pay such costs as are reasonable and necessary for their maintenance, protection, and operation.
