Title 45, Chapter 13, Section 44
The department shall be under the immediate management and control of a director who shall be appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the Secretary of State. Such director shall take an oath of office as other public officials are required to do and shall be commissioned in like manner. Such director shall devote such director's time to the work of the department, using such director's best efforts to develop and build it up so as to carry out the design of its creation, and shall receive for such director's services a salary to be fixed by the Secretary of State. Such director shall have control and direction of the various activities of the department, preserve its collections, care for the official archives which may come into its custody, and perform all of the duties enumerated in Code Section 45-13-41.
